A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity. The hosting can be done in various forms or types depending on the need and use pattern. The following are few of the popular type of Hosting –

  • Free Web Hosting: these are the free services made available by the different hosts with limited services and restricted access. They are often supported by advertisement and are mostly limited when compared to paid hosting.
  • Shared Web Hosting: Under this system of hosting, your website will be placed on the same server as many other sites ranging from a few hundreds or thousands. Under such hosting all the domains may share a common pool of server resource such as the RAM or CPU.
  • Reseller Web Hosting: This type of hosting allows the client to serve as a host themselves. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a collocated server. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider’s shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.
  • Dedicated Web Hosting: Dedicated web hosting is a customized service where the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it. However, the user typically does not own the server.
  • Colocation Web Hosting: They are similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user actually owns the colo server. This type of hosting is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting.
  • Clustered Hosting: Clustered Hosting is the system where multiple servers host the same content. The main aim of this type of hosting is better resource utilization.
