Blogging vs. Websites

Posted under Blogging by admin on Monday 21 March 2011 at 9:34 am

When it comes to starting an online business, whether you’re going to open something elaborate like internet casinos or just something simple like a traffic-driven PPC site offering fresh content, the debate wages on about whether to use a free hosting service with readymade features like a blog or a more detail-oriented standalone hosting service giving you a legitimate website.

Which one better suits your needs – a real website or a gussied up free server?

For most people, it depends on their particular needs. If you’re only going after traffic for PPC ads and affiliate links, then any old thing with fresh content will do. However, if you’re going to attempt to sell any product, to have a professional look, to have a user-friendly interface and easy-to-load features, then having a real website is by far the better investment. And here’s why.

Sure, something “free” stands out above everything else. But like the saying goes, you get exactly what you pay for. Using a free blog limits you to the scripts and other add-ons that particular service allows. So if you wanted to setup an eBook business, for example, your shopping cart options are limited on a blog, as well as your separate pages and downloadable features.

With a real website hosted on a real server, having multiple payment processing options is simple to do and usually included in the most basic of packages. Plus you can set up legitimate pages for each product, reviews, and landing pages and you won’t have to tweak the HTML to turn a “post” into a page.

Then there’s the issue of your site actually being found. Blogs, even well-designed blogs with real domains, circulate mostly around the blogosphere. Web servers, on the other hand, submit your site and its pages to multiple directories for you, and they’re always easily found. Simply put, you won’t have to work as hard to drive traffic to a real website.

Blogs are great for hosting games if you want to give your visitors something to keep them busy. You can throw in an online baccarat game with no problem. However, it comes out looking like a blog post, plus you have to again tweak the HTML to get the right parameters and to make sure the game doesn’t load and play before activated. It’s a task requiring time and knowledge of computer code.

With a web host, you’ll receive drag-and-drop template builders, so anything you want to add can simply be dragged to the location and dropped in neatly, with a hundred times more script options to choose from.

A business is going to be an investment, so it’s always a better idea to pay a few bucks for a real website than to spend months on end trying to recode a blog template to become a faux site. And at the end of the day, your efforts are for naught if you want to actually sell something, because blogs are simply limited.

Types of Hosting

Posted under Hosting services by admin on Tuesday 8 March 2011 at 11:00 pm

A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own or lease for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity. The hosting can be done in various forms or types depending on the need and use pattern. The following are few of the popular type of Hosting –

  • Free Web Hosting: these are the free services made available by the different hosts with limited services and restricted access. They are often supported by advertisement and are mostly limited when compared to paid hosting.
  • Shared Web Hosting: Under this system of hosting, your website will be placed on the same server as many other sites ranging from a few hundreds or thousands. Under such hosting all the domains may share a common pool of server resource such as the RAM or CPU.
  • Reseller Web Hosting: This type of hosting allows the client to serve as a host themselves. Resellers’ accounts may vary tremendously in size: they may have their own virtual dedicated server to a collocated server. Many resellers provide a nearly identical service to their provider’s shared hosting plan and provide the technical support themselves.
  • Dedicated Web Hosting: Dedicated web hosting is a customized service where the user gets his or her own Web server and gains full control over it. However, the user typically does not own the server.
  • Colocation Web Hosting: They are similar to the dedicated web hosting service, but the user actually owns the colo server. This type of hosting is the most powerful and expensive type of web hosting.
  • Clustered Hosting: Clustered Hosting is the system where multiple servers host the same content. The main aim of this type of hosting is better resource utilization.

Web Hosting Servers

A server is typically a series of computers, which link other computers or electronic devices together. Servers are the basic force which supports a web hosting. There are basically two fundamental flavours of web hosting servers; managed servers and unmanaged servers.

An Unmanaged server is basically not managed by the hosting company, but managed by you, the customers. In an unmanaged setup, the client i.e. the customers are primarily responsible for the general upkeep of the server and the website’s back-end. Besides the physical maintenance to the server in this system, the client has to do a lot of other things as well. The client is responsible for things like patching the system, fixing bugs in the software, installing and configuring web applications and services, updating software and providing virtual security. There are a few benefits from using the unmanaged server. Here are a few of the benefits –

Benefits

  • You can have complete control on the server
  • If you know the ways to administer a server, a self managed or an unmanaged server will be cost effective and will actually cost you lesser than a managed server.

A Managed server is typically hosted and managed by a web hosting company for you. Under managed server, as a customer, you would be able to set up the basics, like domains and mailboxes, but the web host company remains responsible for all necessary configurations and maintenance of the server. These servers would be beneficial as the hosting company takes care of all the security related issues. As a customer you don’t have to worry about the issues relating to the security and other malware protection issues. The advantages of such servers are –

Benefits

  • Security updates are completed by provider, so you have no headaches.
  • Any issues relating to server are addressed by the service provider

Home Servers

Posted under Servers by admin on Wednesday 5 January 2011 at 10:58 pm

A home server is a server that is located in a private residence providing services to other devices inside or outside the household through a home network or the internet. Such services may include file and printer serving; media centre serving, web serving, web caching, account authentication and backup services. Because of the relatively low number of computers on a typical home network, a home server commonly does not require significant computing power. These are servers are generally free of congestion and are faster compared to the External Servers. Home servers run on many different operating systems. Enthusiasts who build their own home servers can use whatever OS is conveniently available or familiar to them, such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Solaris or BSD.

The Home Servers provides various services. Some of the most important services provided by the home servers are mentioned here –

Centralized Storage: Home servers often act as network-attached storage providing the major benefit that all users’ files can be centrally and securely stored, with flexible permissions applied to them. The files are put in a shared drive which is password protected and can be accessed using any computer connected to the network.

Media Serving: Home servers are often used to serve multi-media content, including photos, music, and video to other devices in the household. Using standard protocols such as DLNA or proprietary systems such as iTunes users can access their media stored on the home server from any room in the house. Some home servers provide remote access to media and entertainment content.

E-Mail: Many home servers also run e-mail servers that handle e-mail for the owner’s domain name. The advantages of e-mail servers are having much bigger mailboxes and maximum message size than most commercial e-mail services. The access to the server is much faster than any external servers. This also increases security as e-mails do not reside on an off-site server.

DNS Servers

Posted under Servers by admin on Saturday 9 October 2010 at 10:57 pm

The Domain Name System (DNS) system is used to allocate internet protocol address to a domain name. Every computer connected to the internet must have an IP address in order to receive the information on the network. The IP address is represented in the form of numbers and dots e.g. 172.165.0.1. A DNS system with a domain server resolves this address to words that will be easy to remember.

A DNS Server is categorized into two basic types i.e. the Private DNS Server and Public DNS Servers. However, using Public DNS servers might result in problems such as cache poisoning and DNS amplification attacks. Out of the two the Public DNS servers are mostly used. A private server is used to set up private home connection.

Public DNS server is open and can easily be accessed by virtually any computer user. It is managed by volunteer engineers free of charge and they are commonly powered by FreeBSD servers which are protected by uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Users can find their IP by sending a query to WHOIS server or the DNS database using various DNS management tools like DNS lookup, DNS query and WHOIS. A public DNS server allows the user to write his own zone file and distribute it to the internet through public DNS hosts.

Private DNS server refers to the DNS servers that a reseller is using to provide DNS services to his customers. The customer has to have his domain registration point to the DNS servers of a web host where his website is hosted so that visitors can find it. Under such server the reseller doesn’t have his own infrastructure. He actually leases the infrastructure from the actual web host.

Out of the two the Public DNS server is the most popular and most used servers. The flexibility and ease of access makes it the most popular out of the two.
